So Oppo! I'll be going to NJ in a few weeks. I've been promised a day in NYC where I can go do whatever I want. So, obviously, I want to do something car related. i'd love to get into the Manhattan Classic Car Club, but is it open to the public? I don't mind admission costs I just want to go in. Any other cool car related things to do up there? Thanks!

I'd like to know this as well. If I ever make it up to NYC, CCC is definitely going to be one of my stops (if possible).

Just walk right in and bug everyone you see. Just kidding. But seriously, just walk right in, they're super friendly.
Let me know when you're in NJ, there are some wicked car shows out here you'd like.

You have no idea how hard I'm trying to convince the family to get out of Florida! I hate it here!

Oh, you're in for a huge treat. There's a huge charity show that I'm going to that's the first weekend of August. 500-700 of the coolest and rarest cars in Northern NJ. Not even joking. It's a Sunday morning. The day before, there's a weekly cruise night at a diner that I go to all the time. I'd gladly take you up there to see those cars (some of which will be at the show on the following Sunday).
CCC is easy to find, right by the Holland Tunnel. Doors are usually open, so just mosey around. There's nothing between you and the cars. I went, but didn't post the pictures because they were mostly on my phone, and nothing special. But everyone there is super nice, if you have any questions, just walk up and ask, they'll either fill you in, or point you to whoever can.

How is it as a car enthusiast in NYC? My wife wants to move to a big city like NYC, but I'm hesitant because a) there's a metric shit-ton of people and b) I like driving to work, not walking

I'll give you all the details. I know the foundation that runs it very well. If I can get enough Oppos to sign up, we can even get parking together.

Show your parents how much your hate it there by
1. Going to college out of state, preferably NJ because the taxes are less than NY. (I live in NY)
2. Never going back.

Do you know of anything going on Labor Day weekend? I'll be staying in Toms River that weekend and going to NYC for the day that Saturday.

Sadly, I don't live in the city, so I drive to work.
I'd rather live in the city though. I probably wouldn't have my own car, and just spend the money on a CCC membership.

We drive outside the city for fun. Do not plan to drive to work in NYC. I don't even drive to work.

Ah, gotcha. Yea, that's what I would do if I lived there. Sell both cars and join the club. $500/mo for base membership isn't bad at all considering I'm paying a decent amount over that right now.

It is open to the enthusiast public. Just walk in have a look around. I used to work there. If anyone asks what you're doing just tell them you heard about it on Jalopnik and they'll most likely leave you alone. Enjoy!

Gotcha, my concern was that since I like driving, I would miss it because I wouldn't be able to drive to work. I wouldn't plan on driving if we moved there, that's just insane. Nor do I want to pay for a parking place.

That's the weekend of 8/30 right? The Lead East show is on, but there's a second show that's also the same weekend.
Lead East is "the worlds largest 50's party" and is actually like, 10 minutes from my house, not even. The show is a bit pricey to get into, but people come from all over the East Coast to attend it. A couple years ago, Chip Foose made an appearance as well. Live music, well over 800 cars usually. It's a nuthouse, but awesome. Hard to justify $25/head though, depending on what you consider too expensive. There's like a $2 off coupon on their website, so take whatever you can get with this. The guy who organizes and runs the event does it as his living, so he doesn't have a regular day job. It's understandable considering it's his income, but the price is pretty ridiculous regardless.
The other show is run by the car club Dead Mans Curve, and is up in Mahwah I believe. Supposed to be cheaper, and draw cars away from Lead East (because it's all a dick waving competition around here). Whichever you go to (or just go to both), you're going to see some INSANE cars. Seriously. I'm familiar with most of the people, but it's still amazing to see these cars.
I suggest catching the Saturday Cruise night, because there are a handful of insane machines that don't go to the other shows, and you really shouldn't miss them.

Yes. I'm pre-registering at least one car. I might bring two though. Not sure. I'm still deciding which to bring. I park with a club no matter what, but I'd love to see if some Opponauts will join.

No you do not want to pay for a parking place. Commuting for work in nyc will make you hate driving. Save that money you'd use on parking an join CCC, then use cars on the weekend for fun stuff and retain your love of driving!

That'll definitely be the plan if we ever move to NYC! Biggest challenge would be finding a job in NYC, in my field at least. Especially with the change in the cost of living, I would have to find something about 2X my current salary.

It's actually not all that great unless you:
A) Have your own private parking at home
and
B) Commute somewhere outside of Manhattan for work
The general consensus is that it's stupid to own a car in NYC, I don't agree with it but it is a challenge. If you have your own parking at home and commute into the city via public transportation for work (if you end up working in Manhattan) it's less stressful.
Understand there is a metric shit ton of people, street parking can be a hassle, pedestrians cross as they please, people drive super aggressively, most people can't park or want to squeeze into any space they can even if it means hitting your car multiple times, there are fire hydrants every 100 feet or so that you can't park within 15 feet of, and a shit load of parking rules/signs that prevent parking.

2 Questions for you:
1. If I go to the BMWCCA AutoX this weekend in NJ, will they kick me out? I'm neither a member nor do I have a BMW. I've read somewhere that all you need to do is join on site to run the course.
2. Are you going to this event? It's a BMW event in NJ, so it makes sense that you'd show up.

I would go but it's up in the air, that day I've got some groupon Nassau Coliseum event to race either a Lamborghini or a Ferrari for 5 laps but they've already rescheduled it twice due to capacity issues so let's see. If they cancel again I'd be down to go

Shoot me an email, and I'll get a list together. Also watch out for tonight, I'll be posting about the event again to see who else wants to go.
Pre-registration needs to happen soon if we want to get parking in the show together.
